About this event

The Navy-Marine Corps Team: A Legacy of Amphibious Operations

Bob Altemus, CAA Member, is going to give a very basic history about the development, specifically ships and helicopters, from the 50’s to the 80’s in the Navy/Marine Corps’ Amphibious capabilities.   He’ll also share his experience flying a Marine CH-53E on two such Amphibious Readiness cruises in 1986 and 1988, and what it’s like in the ‘Gator Navy’ doing ‘Brown Water’ operations.

Bob brings over 40 years of diverse experience in the aviation industry. Starting with a BS Degree in Aviation Maintenance Management, his path took a different flight plan with a distinguished 21-year career in the US Marine Corps and US Navy, flying heavy transport helicopters and serving in other non-flying roles.

After retiring in 2003 to West Linn, OR, Bob explored a wide range of aviation pursuits. His journey included corporate and charter flying with Flightcraft at PDX, airport development, a brief stint with Horizon Airlines as a Part 121 pilot, and a decade in airport operations at PDX. He capped off his remarkable career as a co-pilot on Sikorsky Skycranes, battling wildfires for five years.

Today, Bob enjoys the simplicity and joy of general aviation, flying for pleasure out of Mulino. We’re proud to have him as a member of the Columbia Aviation Association!
