FAA Turbulence Efforts (via ZOOM from the East Coast)
Presenters: Tammy Flowe and Gary Pokodner

Turbulence can be nerve racking to passengers and even to pilots. Their dynamic nature makes it difficult to forecast accurately their exact location and intensity thus contributing to turbulence being a leading cause of injuries and terrified passengers. This session will provide recommendations to help avoid flying into turbulence by providing information on what causes turbulence, areas of likely encounters, products to support avoidance, and ongoing FAA research to enhance the quality of turbulence observations and forecasts.

Tammy Flowe is a Research Meteorologist and the Manager of the Weather Research Branch with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Aviation Weather Division.

Gary Pokodner came to the FAA in January 2011 after working for ARINC for 25 years on military avionics acquisition programs. Gary is the FAA’s NextGen Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC) Program Manager.
