Misconceptions and Oddities in Aerodynamics
Airplanes fly because of lift. Wings create pressure differences. Turbulence makes for a bumpy ride. Simple enough, right? Well, perhaps not!
CAA welcomes Professor Robert "Bob" Breidenthal of the University of Washington's William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics for a fascinating presentation exploring the surprising and sometimes counterintuitive science of flight. Professor Breidenthal will be joining us live via Zoom.
Going beyond familiar ground-school explanations, Bob will explore unusual aerodynamic phenomena, including how wings generate lift, transonic airflow, thunderstorms, and the surprising similarities between aircraft and meteor wake turbulence.
A professor since 1980 and a longtime researcher in turbulence, Bob is also an experienced pilot of powered aircraft and gliders. As the owner of a Cessna 172N and a Schweizer 1-26A sailplane, he brings both scientific expertise and practical flying experience to the discussion.
