Ship History: The USS Hornet CV-12 was commissioned as an attack aircraft carrier in 1943 to replace the famous USS Hornet CV-8 that launched Jimmy Doolittle’s raid on Japan. In 1958 the Hornet was reclassified as an antisubmarine carrier CVS-12. During its active-duty years, it served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In 1970 the Hornet was decommissioned and went into mothballs at the Bremerton Navy Shipyard.
In 1998 the Hornet was relocated to Alameda, California and became a 501C3 naval museum and was designated as a National Historic Landmark. It has been constantly improved and managed by a select group of professional leaders.
The Hornet was the recovery ship for the NASA Apollo 11 and 12 moon missions and the ship’s displays include replicas of the astronaut’s Airstream Mobile Quarantine Facility trailer and space capsule inhabited by Neal Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
