Dick Ionata - National Aeronautic Association
Date 3/24/2005
Dick Ionata, an observer for the National Aeronautic Association, was an official observer for the recent Steve Fossett solo jet round-the-world flight. Dick is a retired United Airlines (31 years) 767 captain . He flew with the Air Force (8 years), including missions in Vietnam.

The National Aeronautic Association has been around nearly as long as powered flight--it is the oldest national aviation organization in the United States. NAA is a non-profit 501 (c ) (3) "dedicated to the advancement of the art, sport and science of aviation in the United States,” as stated in our Mission Statement. The core of NAA is its membership—thousands of individuals and dozens of organizations representing all segments of American aviation belong to our organization. NAA’s scope encompasses all areas of flight – from skydiving and models to commercial airlines and military fighters.
NAA is the record-keeper for United States aviation. Anyone who wants to set a record in the air must do so through our Contest & Records department. NAA provides observers for many record attempts and compiles all the data necessary to certify records. NAA maintains all current U.S. and world aviation and space records and makes the information available to members and others.
Some of the nation’s most prestigious aviation awards are administered by NAA, including the Collier Trophy and the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy. The Awards & Events department collects nominations and assembles committees to select the winners for several awards annually, presenting them at ceremonies and events throughout the year.
