the President, First Lieutenant ERNEST P. WAKEHOUSE AO 1903788 awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross First Lieutenant Ernest P. WAKEHOUSE distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 18 November 1951. As flight leader in a flight of four (4) P-51 type aircraft Lieutenant WAKEHOUSE led his flight in a series of devastating attacks using napalm rockets and machine guns on enemy troops, troop bunkers and supplies near Sondong-ni, Korea. Despite poor visibility and the intense enemy opposition encountered, Lieutenant WAKEHOUSE repeatedly pressed attacks and directed the members of his flight against all new targets observed in the area. Leaving the area only after all ordinance had been expended, Lieutenant WAKEHOUSE reassembled his flight and led them safely to the home base. These devastating attacks resulted in forty (40) enemy troops being killed personally by Lieutenant WAKEHOUSE, sixty (60) others by the remainder of the flight plus numerous enemy bunkers destroyed, thereby seriously hampering the enemy's operations in this area. By his conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty, Lieutenant WAKEHOUSE has brought great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. |
