2 Idaho men killed as plane veers off runway, crashes

Two Boise-area men died and a third was hurt Tuesday when their airplane left the runway and struck a tree as they tried to land at a private airstrip east of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

The single-engine, four-seat Lancair IV broke apart after its right wing clipped a tree, veering into timber along the runway. A Kootenai County sheriff's spokesman said it appeared the plane's right main landing gear got into the gravel beside the pavement, which pulled the plane off the runway.

Nate Calvin, 34, of Boise was ejected from the plane and survived. He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, where he was being treated for broken legs, cuts and bruises. Dead at the scene were Barry Boepple, 39, of Meridian, Idaho, and Grant Bailey, 32, of Boise.

Bailey was flying at the time of the accident, according to Capt. Ben Wolfinger of the sheriff's department.

The Lancair IV is a high performance graphite composite plane that can cruise at about 335 mph and is flown at 90 mph to 100 mph on its final approach to a runway.

An Internet search showed the plane registered to Lancair International of Redmond, the company that builds kits for the Lancair IV. However, company officials were unavailable to confirm whether the plane still belonged to the company. -- Steve Lundgren
